The ‘Amateurs’ meme is a 4-panel webcomic created in December 2016 by comic artist Shen Comix, then known as Owl Turd Comix. The original image shows humanlike representations of the years 2014 and 2015 arguing over a certain topic when a hooded third figure calls them Amateurs and is revealed as the year 2016 (to state that the last is superior in terms of taking celebrity lives). Due to the exploitable nature of the image, the format was soon taken, re-labeled and altered to produce variants of the meme. First released by the author himself in December 2016, the meme gained moderate response over the course of three years on Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr. It wasn’t until after June 2019 that the format gained increased popularity on the platform. The ‘Amateurs’ meme is also (sometimes erroneously) referred to as: What was that, punk?, shen punk meme, amateurs and punk, hooded guys amateur meme.
