Fixing Leak with Flex Tape
Fixing Leak with Flex Tape history (read more...)
The beauty of a meme often lies in the randomness of its source, and Phil Swift slaps on Flex Tape is one such gem. The meme features two frames from a YouTube commercial by the American company Swift Response - showing salesman Phil Swift preparing to dramatically slap a piece of Flex Tape onto a leaking container of water to stop the leak, and subsequently doing so. This isn’t the only meme to come out of Swift Response’s ads, as they have birthed a variety of others. The meme is used in multiple contexts: depicting the literal act of slapping or attaching something, indicating an actual fix of some sort made to an existing problem, or sarcastically with the implication that the figurative ‘fix’ was shoddy and/or ill-conceived.
Although the original commercial was released in 2017, the image first became a meme in December 2018, and was used in its current format a month after. A popular variant of the meme captions Phil Swift as Jesus, and after he slaps on the tape, shows the water is still leaking out from where the nail holes in Jesus’ hands would be. This format was later also used with the aforementioned context of a shoddy fix. The Phil Swift slaps on Flex Tape meme is also (sometimes erroneously) referred to as: Patching a leak with tape, Fixing jug of leaking water, Phil swift patching a jar of water with tape, guy patching leak with tape.
